Quick Questions About The Smoking Ban

I need to silence a UKIP loudmouth. Please help.

In which European countries (if any) is smoking in bars still allowed?

Am I correct in thinking the the smoking ban wasn't imposed on us by Brussels?

TIA

You are right - for example, you can still happily puff away in Brussels itself, for Belgium has no ban. Neither does Luxembourg (although smoking where food is served is off the menu). In bars you're fine.

I say all this - I love the smoking ban. But shutting up UKIP twats comes first.

The Czech Republic, for the time being - there are a few no smoking pubs in Prague, but I am not sure how good they are (most of my mates smoke so allowances have to be made).

Romania has no such ban.

I'm sure you can dig up a longer list by set-subtracting the list of European countries from this list of bans.

People were chuffing away happily in Budapest, Hungary whilst drinking Pilsner Urquell from stemmed glasses when I was there a few weeks back. Very strange it was too. Amazing that it seems such a foreign concept after just 18 months of the ban. I thought it was an EU directive though.

Thanks All.

Keep 'em coming, it's not over yet.

Why do you talk to such people? Indeed, how do you end up encountering them? Methinks you keep bad company, Pickthall!

I should have explained that the UKIP loudmouth bombards my local paper with letters attributing the EU with a range of nefarious plots. This week he implied the smoking ban was inflicted on us by Brussels in order to damage our fine British institution, the pub.

No, there are a few things that might be attributable to the EU, but the smoking ban is NOT one of them.

Having just come back from Brussels I now believe it is our own government that creates much of the problems, and then hides behind EU legislation because they find it hard to defend their own policies.

I can back up JesusJohn here-- when I was in Brussels just a short while ago people were happily smoking and the waiters always provide you with an ash tray when you sit down.

I dig the smoking ban and missed it while there!
